Unexpected

So today, I planned to give you an update on my #6monthchallenge.

I was even going to do it on video.

But a funny thing happened when I got a blog update from my little “sis,” Alisha, this morning. Her post was inviting me to participate in a year-end writing project called Reverb10.

Created by Gwen Bell, the project invites you to reflect on your year and manifest what’s next.   With daily prompts, some provided by published authors, we will be sharing our story and sending out  reverberations for the year ahead.

Now understand that yesterday, I sat down to figure out a schedule to catch up on my Inspired Maven work.  It meant posting every day.

And I got stuck.

Not to be deterred, I got up this morning with a plan to combine a couple of things to make it work.

Reverb10 was an unexpected…distraction.

Or so I thought.

I planned on just doing the project “silently,” just sharing with Alisha.

And then I saw that one of my tweeties, Julie Daley, was singing the project’s praises.

Cool.

Later in the day, I got a blog update from my spiritual mentor, Sally G, that she was participating.

Want to know the funny thing about all that?

Yesterday, I drafted a post that included Alisha, Sally and Julie.

Ok, then.

Clearly there was a message.

A rather unexpected and somewhat unwelcome one, because it was “forcing” me to change plans.

Recognizing that I was being led, I sat down to look at the first prompt:

December 1 One Word.
Encapsulate the year 2010 in one word. Explain why you’re choosing that word. Now, imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2011 for you?
(Author: Gwen Bell)

My word for 2010?

Unexpected.

I didn’t expect that we’d start the year with my husband on the couch, essentially furloughed.  But we did.

While we expected him to eventually get promoted this year, we didn’t expect that we’d be moving to another state.  But we did.

I didn’t expect that my daughter would actually enjoy college after such a long hiatus from school.  But she does.

I never expected Twitter to foster friendships that feed my soul.  But it did.

I certainly never expected to be named a Top 10 Coaching Blog winner.  But I was.

And the fun I’ve had here at Lisa-Unmasked since the contest was unimaginable.  But here I am, having a ball.

And thanks to the “unexpected” #6monthchallenge, I am writing…everyday.

Uncovering lots of unexpected stuff, but writing nonetheless.

And Reverb10 will keep me on track through the month of December.

Pretty. Freakin’.  Awesome.

Yes, 2010 was a year of lots of unexpected things.

And I’m pretty darn grateful.

My word for 2011.

YES.

Yes to the Universe.

Yes to Life.

Yes to the Unknown.

Unexpected things, that are just too awesome, wait for me in the YES.  I  don’t want to miss them.

How about you?  What’s your word for 2010?  What’s it gonna be for 2011?  (Share baby, Share! 🙂 )

(Oh, and if you’d like join the Reverb10 project, jump on in here)

Yes to you!!!! "Unexpected" … what a glorious word, for what I consider a very challenging year. May I share "Yes" with you as my word for 2011?

    LOVE YOU!

Thanks, Amanda. Am really overwhelmed by the awesomeness of the group. 🙂 I may not get any work done this month.

Really appreciate you stopping by. Glad to welcome you to the Lisa-Unmasked fam.

U-Turn. At the beginning of the year I was sitting on my sofa, slinging snot and eating cookie dough out of the tube with no remorse!

NOW…I am back to school, down 20 pounds and about to embark on the journey of a lifetime by starting my own business!

    You rock the hizzy,

Damn gurl! You rocked the hell out of 2010 and lived to tell about it! 🙂

Saying "I'm proud of you" seems so trite. What I hope (and always have) is that you look yourself in the eye and say, "I AM FUCKING AWESOME!" Because you are. Whether sitting on the sofa or looking through a camera lens, YOU are one amazing young lady and I am proud to be in your circle.

Here's to more magic & miracles in 2011. Say YES!!

    xoxo

This is such a wonderfully committed post, I was unsurprised when it ended on the note of YES. Felt like you were building up that energy every step of the way. Congrats on the successes you celebrated and the challenges you overcame in 2010! I look forward to reading more of your #reverb10 journey and your progress into 2011!

  10. LisaMilesBrady Says:

Thank you, Miscellanea! Am honored you stopped by and shared.

Funny that you were "unsurprised" 'cause I had no idea where I was going. 🙂 I actually wrote 4 pages long-hand on this prompt before deciding to blog and as I re-read it, I realized that every word I could use for 2011 required me to say YES.

And now I have. Publicly. HA!

Stop by often. And welcome to the Lisa-Unmasked family.

Lisa, I love it! Unexpected. and, Yes. How amazing that all things came together. No, not really amazing at all. I'm so glad you're reverbing…

  12. LisaMilesBrady Says:

Oh Julie, thank YOU. Means a lot that you dropped in. 🙂

It's been a year that has not been without challenges but as I look around the house I have dreamed about, getting ready to take my daughter to college, in a city I love living in, I am still amazed. And grateful.

And you, my dear, are one of my unexpected treasures of 2010 as well. Thank you for being in my life.

What fantastic words. Many gifts come in unexpected ways and you have had a blessed year. (And no, I didn't expect Twitter to bring me such amazing friendships either :))

I believe there are bigger and better things waiting for you to say "yes" in the upcoming year. Thank you for saying "yes" to Reverb. I'm excited to share these reflections with you.

    XOXO
    your sis 🙂

  17. LisaMilesBrady Says:

And thank YOU for being one of my many unexpected gifts of 2010. I always wanted a little sister. 🙂

Seeing the gifts in things has never been my strong suit. But yesterday in answering the prompt in long-hand, a new perspective, 4 years in the making showed up. I am so grateful you shared Reverb10 (and that I was actually paying attention!)

    xoxo

  18. @Sally_G Says:

How magical to be participating in this event with your Sister. It hadn't occurred to me to ask my sister to participate – she's so busy with so many things … but you know what, it might be just what she needs. So ~ there you go – Unexpected inspiration. Thank you!

And yes – YES is perfect for you. In fact, I think our 2011 words are quite similar … though mine would beat yours in a game of Scrabble. (Who said that?)

    You're a blessing Lisa!!
My recent post Next year- I will release the Measure Stick …

  19. LisaMilesBrady Says:

HA! Since I hate to lose, I don't play games. So the Scrabble win is all yours. 🙂

Oh dear One, what can I say? Looks like you, me & Amy are EMBARKING on an UNEXPECTED ADVENTURE that we were ready to say YES to. 🙂

Thank YOU for being a blessing in my life.

  20. Amy Oscar Says:

Unexpected – a word for the hug you sent to me a few months back; a hug that led from Lori to you. You've been one of many unexpected gifts to me this year. Thanks for that hug – and for your E-friendship and support. My word for this challenge was: Embark. I feel as if you, too, are on my little boat with me. Let's go!

  21. LisaMilesBrady Says:

    Amy,

Suddenly I am at a loss for words. You, too, are one of my many unexpected gifts of 2010. I hope that very soon I'll be able to give you that hug in person.

Thank you for being an angel in my life.

Thanks for stopping by, Angel. You can imagine my surprise when I say your email (I LOVE your 100 day countdown, btw) after writing my post. Indeed, it was confirmation I was on the right track. 🙂
