What it’s like to be heard

I had big plans for the day.

It was going to be a painting day.

Few things get me more excited than new paints and a blank canvas. And I had both. (*cue angelic choir*)

MAGIC was going to happen.

And then I made the mistake of reading email. (more…)

Are YOU Open?

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality… I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

It’s been a crazy week. One that saw my daughter starting college full-time, me getting a “job” and included my 1st “hater” on the blog.

But the craziest thing this week occurred on Twitter tonight.

I got in the middle of a religious/political “conversation” and found my worst fear may be true. (more…)

VIDEO – Rachel Maddow Show: Be afraid, white people! The black people are coming for you!

I’ve been looking for a way to share this clip with you for several days. Thanks to the folks at The Political Carnival* for making it easy.

I’d never seen Rachel Maddow’s show before. I actually do not watch the news on purpose, so the Shirley Sherrod scandal was “old news” by the time I’d heard about it.

What Rachel points out in the video is how white people are being manipulated for political gain. Day after day, you are being given a multitude of reasons to be afraid. Afraid that someone, mainly (and conveniently) black people are taking away what belongs to YOU.

It’s not a new strategy.

What gets me is that it still works. (more…)

Left Wondering….(a continuation of what needs to be said)

I have written two different posts in the past few days–both of which, I was too afraid to post.  It seems Lisa may not be as “unmasked” as she believed.  My new #bff, Peggie, has (ahem) suggested that perhaps I write a series of blog posts to help me with this story that has decided it must be told.

I go back to the post, “What Needed to be Said” as the title of the emerging series.  I hope you’ll stay with me to see where it goes.  And most of all, please share what is coming up for you. If we are going to heal our deepest wounds, we must give light to our stories.  Share them in whatever way(s) we can and know that in doing so, we are helping each other.

And that is the real reason we are here anyway.

This post I wrote about the July 4th holiday in the US: (more…)

It Starts at Home

(NOTE:  This is probably the longest post I’ve written-1660+ words.  And it includes a 10 minute video.  Please take your time with it.  If you don’t want to be challenged, don’t bother reading it.  It WILL make you uncomfortable.)

It may or may not be shocking to you that an educated, black business owner who was once an internal diversity consultant would make such a bold admission.

And here’s another shocker:  Chances are, SO ARE YOU.

Are you uncomfortable yet?

Good. (more…)
